For small family businesses like Chinook Services, the weight of regulations has become increasingly burdensome. Compounded by soaring housing costs in areas like Everett, Seattle, and Bellevue, these regulations pose significant challenges for families trying to make ends meet.
Affordable Housing Crisis
The aspiration of owning an affordable home increasingly appears beyond reach, owing to the labyrinth of regulations imposed by local planning and building departments. From stringent wetland studies to buffer requirements, zoning ordinances, and more, these regulations inflate construction costs and erect insurmountable barriers for individuals aiming to construct homes. While some regulations serve environmental purposes and may be beneficial, it’s evident that they primarily benefit large-scale builders, realtors, and government tax revenue. These regulations impose a severe burden on the average person simply trying to establish themselves in life. It’s regrettable that we’ve allowed this situation to unfold, and it’s utterly unacceptable.
The Unintended Consequences of Sick Leave Legislation
One such regulation, the Washington sick leave ordinance passed in 2016, has had unintended consequences for small businesses like Chinook Services. Intended to provide workers with essential benefits, it has added to the financial strain on businesses already reeling from the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. Our prices went up to compensate for the covid crisis. Additionally, now we are raising our prices again due to this regulation and the price of fuel.
Challenges Faced by Workers
The impact of these regulations isn’t limited to businesses; it also affects their employees. Many workers find themselves priced out of urban areas, forced to commute from distant towns like Mt. Vernon, Sultan, and Tacoma. Escalating housing and fuel costs only compound their financial struggles.
Policies must be crafted with a deep understanding of their real-world implications for businesses and workers. The relentless imposition of regulations threatens to stifle innovation and economic growth.
Seeking Solutions Together
To address these challenges, stakeholders must come together to advocate for sensible regulation that supports rather than stifles small businesses. By creating an environment conducive to entrepreneurship, we can empower businesses to thrive and workers to prosper. It is much easier for a company like Amazon to afford to pay the increased fuel costs and regulations like the sick leave. However, it is almost impossible for small companies to navigate.

It’s time to reassess our approach to regulation and prioritize the needs of small businesses and workers. By striking a balance between regulation and flexibility, we can pave the way for a more equitable and prosperous future for all.
